Religion

Pa Joad is a simple man that does not look devoted to any religion. But like Jim Casy was a preach that means that the religion in that town was based on God; so most of the people were Christians. So that means that probably Pa Joad was a Christian.

Monologue: Dialogue "Pa Joad and Tom Joad"

Pa: It looks like not all the good things are the ones you see when you’re alive, cause this place is damn nice.

Tom: Im glad Im her with you and notn jail.

Pa: Yes, Im glad to have you here too. You cant imagine how bad I felt when they took you away from our family, but Im still proud of you boy standing up for your sister.

Tom: Thanks Pa. You know I'll protect yawl if something happens.

Pa: I know you will, thats why you're gonna have a great life.

Tom: I sure hope that the baby of Rose of Sharon has a good life and doesnt have to pass threw something like we did.

Pa: Dont worry, that fela is gonna be just fine, because he is from Oklahoma.

Tom: Yeah, he sure will.

Pa: Now I know why the dead stay dead, to stay in this beautiful place for all eternity.

Tom: Yeah. Remember when Pa died? I think the trip made him a favor by making him come up here. Well, I think it did all of us a favor, because now we all have each other, and we have peace.

Pa Joad: You are damn right about that. In some parts of this journey I kind of lost faith, you know like in having a job again, in having good food again.

Tom: Well you aint the only one, I though I was going to be sent to jail, fearing that the police of California would catch me and say that I was causing trouble or something, and that would a meant them sending me back to Oklahoma, to a jail.

Pa: Yeah, I felt great fear when I heard that because of you being in parole you couldn’t leave the country.

Tom: I felt a great change at the end of our lives.

Pa Joad: Yes, I felt It too. At first I felt that I made the important decisions in the family. But then I realized you were the one making them.

Tom: I think that Ma started to make the decisions because you where more and more depressed by the fact you couldn’t find work.

Pa Joad: Well… maybe I should thank her because of taking the head of the family, because its true that each time more I felt bad and impotent because I couldn’t do nothing to help my family.

Tom: Yes, Ma did the right thing…

Pa: Maybe… But what really matters is that now we are all together and united once again as a family.

Monologue: Dialogue "Male Dominance"

In my family I always made the important calls, but everything has changed now. I could notice that during the journey to California Ma always was gettin' the family in order and she was the one thinkin' for the family. I noticed that everytime she damn could she became the leader, that made me look bad, but it was for what was best for the family. But I know that someday Im gonna get my position back, and when that comes we'll be gonna eatin' like kings.

    Educational

Pa Joad didn't receive much of an education because of the environment they live. It is because of the environment because as soon as a boy is strong and can do some kind of labour they go do it the earn some money. They also work since they are little because they do it to eat something that they; they live in a rural area where there are no schools and the only thing they do is to work for their life.

    Philosophy

At the beginning of the book Pa Joad is thought to be the leader like all the men are in their families, because in those times they lived in a male Chauvinistic society, were women were left aside and could not participate in important things or events. But later in the book it is shown when Ma Joad is the real leader of the family because she is the one that decides that Casy may come along with them. Pa Joad notices when Ma assume this role, he does not like it, but he says nothing because its the best for the family.

    Emotional Characteristics

Pa Joad has a really intense love for his family because he is always trying what is best for his family, and also he always tries to look out for them and maintaining them. Even though Ma Joad assumes the roll of the leader he keeps loving his family and wanting the best for them.

    General Description

Pa Joad is a complex character that in its way through the book changes in a drastic way. At first when the Joad family lived in Oklahoma Pa Joad was a normal man, he was dominant coming to family decisions because all the women including Ma Joad were left aside. But when the Dust Ball occurred Oklahoma was were it was the worst. So Pa Joad realized that if they stayed in Oklahoma they would probably die because of the lack of jobs. So they decided to move to California because they read in a flier that there were a lot of "job opportunities". But moving to California meant for Pa Joad to start all over again, and Pa Joad wasn't ready for the change but anyway the Joad family move to California. But what Pa Joad does not realize is that this trip is the beginning of his "doom" as the family leader in the male chauvinistic society in the book. The first sign that indicates that Ma Joad is the natural leader of the family and is foreshadowing that she will continue being the leader in future situations is when she decides that Casey (the preacher) can travel with them to California. But threw most of the book he shows his love ancommitment to protect his family.
