General Description

Pa Joad is a complex character that in its way through the book changes in a drastic way. At first when the Joad family lived in Oklahoma Pa Joad was a normal man, he was dominant coming to family decisions because all the women including Ma Joad were left aside. But when the Dust Ball occurred Oklahoma was were it was the worst. So Pa Joad realized that if they stayed in Oklahoma they would probably die because of the lack of jobs. So they decided to move to California because they read in a flier that there were a lot of "job opportunities". But moving to California meant for Pa Joad to start all over again, and Pa Joad wasn't ready for the change but anyway the Joad family move to California. But what Pa Joad does not realize is that this trip is the beginning of his "doom" as the family leader in the male chauvinistic society in the book. The first sign that indicates that Ma Joad is the natural leader of the family and is foreshadowing that she will continue being the leader in future situations is when she decides that Casey (the preacher) can travel with them to California. But threw most of the book he shows his love ancommitment to protect his family.
